- Hérault de Séchelles, Marie-Jean
(1759-1794)
political figure, magistrate
Born in Paris, where he served as an attorney, Marie-Jean Hérault de Séchelles joined the revolution of 1789 and took his place in the Legislative Assembly with the leftist deputies, then with the montagnards in the Convention, where he was president during the proscription of the principal girondin leaders (June 2, 1793). He helped to write the Constitution of the Year I (adopted by the Convention June 24, 1793) and, as a member of the Committee of Public safety, helped to organize the terror. As a friend of georges danton, however, and with connections to the Hébertists, he soon became suspect himself and was accused of having revealed some of the committee's confidential information. Hérault de séchelles was condemned to death and guillotined with Danton and the indulgents in April 1794.
